Friday Favorite: tartan and pheasant feathers

There’s an art to holiday decorating.

In no way have I mastered it, but those that have know that the trick lies in being both current and classic. It needs to have a freshness to it, but still look timeless.

Two elements that I think can be used in a new way, but still carry a sense of history, are tartan and pheasant feathers.

Here are a few of my favorite looks:

“There hasn’t been more gracious of a host than Nordstrom was at their Opening Gala.” Those were the first words out of my mother’s mouth when asked about her experience at Wednesday night’s gala in Jacksonville, FL.

Fitzgerald said, “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” Even though the temperatures in the South can not yet be described as “crisp,” they are falling, pumpkins are appearing on porches, and autumn wreaths are being hung. Continue reading

I’m currently on the hunt for an Oriental or Persian rug for our kitchen. I LOVE the warmth they bring to kitchens.

Kitchens, with their chrome appliances, shiny tiles, and slick countertops can sometimes seem too cold to me and so unlike the other parts of the home.  With fall approaching, I find myself being drawn more and more to elements of warmth and the addition of an antique or Persian rug to the kitchen seems like the perfect touch. It creates contrast, and contrasts are what create interest.

“‘I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers. It would be terrible if we just skipped from September to November, wouldn’t it? Look at these maple branches. Don’t they give you a thrill–several thrills? I’m going to decorate my room with them.” Anne of Green Gables, L.M. Montgomery

Friday Favorite: Southern Soul Barbeque on St. Simon’s Island

Guy Fieri visited Southern Soul in 2010.

Under the awning of an old gas station from 1940 sits a massive wood burning smoker. Tables share the shade of the portico and people, packed in the rebuilt fueling station, spill out of its door patiently waiting to order their food.  No one is in a hurry because we all know it is worth the wait. I’m pretty sure parts of heaven will smell like Southern Soul. Continue reading

A fresh coat of paint can change a room or restore a piece of furniture. I’ve always believed the same was true for makeup and I find myself writing about it almost as much as subjects that have to do with hosting and serving!
