I wish that I could bottle summer. Sun-kissed days give us a feeling of fearlessness; anything is possible under the summer sun. The real allure of summer, whether you are a student, teacher, or in the corporate field, is that there is time to take a break from the daily grind of “routine.” There are family vacations, traditions, and long, slow days where it’s so hot outside all you feel like doing is sitting on the couch and sinking into Bravo TV.
Summer is the “pause button” in life. In these moments we are free to stop, put down our phones, log off our email, and soak everything in. The “everything” includes not only our surroundings, but ourselves. We finally have the time to explore. No matter where we go during summer, whether it be as far away as London or as close as our own city’s beach, it is not WHERE we go that recharges us. We recharge ourselves because we finally have a moment to pause.
But seasons change, and so do people. The warmth eventually fades, and routine, deadlines, crazy bosses, and October are here before we know it. Sometimes “everyday life” and its pressures seem so big that we forget the warmth of the sun and coolness of the waters.
I don’t want to forget summer. I want to “keep my face towards the sunshine” so “the shadows fall” behind me (Whitman). Here are my favorite pops of summer that I’ve added to my life and home. No matter the season, always remember summer and that feeling of fearlessness.
